Professional window washers all have their own methods of cleaning windows and techniques. Some are faster than others base on their tools, skills, and overall efficiency. Once you understand basic window cleaning tips, you can customize them to accommodate any situation you encounter. The tips below provide a template for window cleaning that you can easily make your own.

Before You Wash…

Make sure you have the right tools for the job. We offer a full list of window cleaning supplies on our website so you know what to get ahead of time. Feel free to start with household products until you build up enough income to invest in professional cleaning solutions.

How To Wash A Window

Every window is a little different, but they all require the same general steps in the end. These include:

  1. Use a window washer to apply cleaning solution (watered dish soap) to your windows, moving in an up and down or side to side motion. Leave a quarter inch gap at the top to prevent dripping.
  2. Dip a squeegee in water, and use it to remove the solution from the window. You can move in a zigzag formation for this, creating tight “S” shapes on the window as you work from top to bottom. You may need to wipe your squeegee blade from time to time if it is dripping too much.
  3. Inspect the windows, especially the edges, to make sure you have cleaned everything. Wipe up any drips you may have missed and check for streaks on the windows.

Believe it or not, those are all the window cleaning tips you need to clean a window, no matter how big or small it may be. The fundamentals are the same with residential window cleaning and commercial window cleaning alike, so you can adjust your strategies no matter what.

Advanced Window Cleaning Tips

Over time, you will find tricks that make your job easier and your cleaning more effective. For instance, Window Academy’s Simple Swirl Method modifies the basic squeegee tips in Step 2 above to make it even easier to clean off a window. Starting from the upper left corner, move straight across the glass until you almost reach the other corner. Just before that, make a semi-circle that puts you into position to swipe to the other side. Repeat the semi-circles when you reach each edge until you make it to the bottom. Eventually, this will become a fluid motion that you can do with ease.

Practice your window cleaning skills and see how you can improve your efficiency and effectiveness on the job.
